Leipzig explain decision to sell Keïta to Liverpool

RB Leipzig director of sports Ralf Rangnick says the club had no choice but to sell Naby Keïta to Liverpool, as they could not afford his salary.
In August, Keïta agreed on a deal to join the English giants after the conclusion of the current season in July 2018. The Reds triggered his reported £48 million release clause in addition to paying extra premiums going up to a figure said to be close to 70 million euros.
Nonetheless, Rangnick maintains that he is a huge admirer of the goal-scoring central midfielder, but that the Bulls have a salary cap when it comes to players’ salaries.
He told leading German sports publication Kicker, “It would be ten times better for me to have him with us for another five years, but that is simply not possible. With us, it is just not possible to pay salaries in the double-digit million range.”
The 59-year-old added that during his own football career he had not seen firsthand as talented a player as the 22-year-old Guinea international, saying, “Naby is an exceptionally talented player, one of the best I have worked with in 20 years of professional football.”
